Summer is over, festivals are gone……..thanks to all who saw us in Amsterdam, Blackpool and Undercover, we really appreciated the reception we got at all three events and it was nice to meet people afterwards…if you didn’t come up and say hello please do next time….you will normally find us in the crowd following a gig as we love watching bands play. It’s been a relatively quiet year for us but we are looking to crank it back up in 2015. Our next gig will be our traditional Christmas outing with The Members (13 Dec at 229 Great Portland St, London) so if you are looking for a Yuletide outing……..
Next year we already have a gig sorted on Valentine’s night with the lovely Spizz….more dates will follow
2015 is also the 35th anniversary of Vic coming out….not sure if we are going to do anything to mark this, still under debate, what I can say is that we have been contacted by a top DJ who wants to do a club remix….we have literally just sent him the masters and are looking forward to what happens to it…….
Just putting together some dates, which will be posted as soon as we get them confirmed….any one wanted to put us on you can contact us through this website. Hoping this year will see us venture abroad, would love to play Eastern Europe, China, Japan and may other places.
Also have the prospect of an EP on the horizon, “The Long March” and “Cause Worth Dying For” new songs which have been going down a storm in our live set are recorded and just need a final mix
Last year was a quiet one for the band with a couple of live dates…but one was Glastonbury, had a great time on the Sunday evening and if we say it ourselves WE ROCKED IT. As you might imagine it was a privilege to play the world’s greatest rock festival made even better by the 2,500 people who filled out our tent, just before us The Vaccines and Public Service Broadcasting had played so we were slightly concerned that the audience in the bars around might not come along as we are at least 10 years older than the previous groups. However we needn’t have worried and we are still getting emails about it now.
Our only London date was at The 100 Club with our good friends and Stiff Records label mates The Members and Ed Tudor Pole. You have to say that The 100 Club is a great rock n roll venue and still a go to destination for music fans of all ages from all countries. Nice to see a few fans from Belgium and the Nederlands came to see us hopefully this year we will come and see you!
Greetings all as the dark months are upon us in the northern hemisphere. Following a low key year things are starting to rumble!
Summer saw Department S play Glastonbury on the Sunday following on from The Vaccines and Public Service Broadcasting. Great times, first time any of us had been to this iconic festival yet alone played at it……still amazes us that they create and cater for 150,000 people on a farm in Somerset.
We have two new videos for you to peruse, firstly a version of “Ode to Koln” filmed at the 100 Club last year and the new DREADZONE single “Too Late” which is based on the opening guitar intro from IS VIC THERE. On the video you will notice that Mick Jones plays guitar…..BUT…..it was actually our own Mike Herbage who laid down the VIC riff on the recording……check it out it’s a great song.
Also if you haven’t already heard it check out CLAN OF XYMOX version of “Is Vic There?” on their latest LP “Kindred Spirits”. It wasn’t going to be on the original album until we played with then at a Goth festival…….great version well worth a listen as are the rest of the tracks.
Winter gigs are being planned both UK and Europe………in October we are playing a London date with Edward Tenpole Tudor and The Members bringing three Stiff Records artists on to one bill. We have been approached by a few other places to take this show on the road, subject to negotiation…….hopefully a few European cities such as Brussels, Paris, Dublin watch this space.
By the way we keep on getting emails from across Western/Eastern Europe and the New World from fans asking up to play in their city…..have guitar will travel is our motto….if you know someone who would put us on pass on the details and we will see if we can sort it
Many moons ago when Eddie Roxy, Dept S director of communications, left the original line up to form his own band , Dream Sequence, he had a big European hit with ‘Outside Looking In’.Here is is again in a filthy acid techno mash up…
Summer is meant to be here……….so Department S are coming out of a long winters hibernation….lots of things are starting to get sorted…..Glastonbury on the Sunday 8pm in the William Green tent, however you might see us wondering around as we plan to be there on Saturday night to see The Rolling Stones…..24 October sees us play at London’s 100 Club with a bunch of STIFF’s (The Members, Ed Tenpole Tudor and hopefully a tbc) we are in talks about taking this line up across to the Continent with a number of capital cities being lined up. More dates will follow and be posted on this site as soon as they are confirmed.
Department S “The Movie” is currently being edited with a launch in the autumn, just in case you don’t know it’s a film of us playing live, not our version of Slade in Flame!! Around the same time we are hoping to release a vinyl copy of “Sub Stance” and a CD version of the new release “The Constructivist’s Nightmare” which is having the finishing touches put on it as we speak
Some of you will be aware that our own and very magnificent Sam Burnett has been out and about with his 60’s influenced band BACK TO ZERO, they are gigging around the UK and well worth seeing if you want a good night out
Lastly Eddie Roxy has been interviewed by the US e-mag Exclusive, click here to read on:
Latest News: Department S now added to line up at this years Glastonbury. Playing on the Williams Green Stage at 8pm on the Sunday night - 30th June, just before The Beat. We believe the appropriate response goes something like …Fuck shit yeah! Whoop! :)
Cold dark months are here….time to reflect back and look forward, rather like the Roman God Janus.
2012 was another mighty fine year….played in Spain for the first time at Benicassim along with The Stone Roses, Noel Gallagher and Bob Dylan. If you like Sea, Sun and Sounds then it has to be the best festival, it was the first gig we have played where the afternoon was spent by the pool sunbathing with The Maccabees! In April we played Rewind in Belgium, great indoor festival which also featured DAF, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Pitchfork Project and Clan of Xymox….the later of which caught our set and decided to add a version of IS VIC THERE? to their excellent covers LP “Kindred Spirits”.
In the UK we did a number of gigs around the country playing with some old friends and some new ones….Penetration, Sham 69, Ed Tenpole Tudor, Chris Pope (The Chords), The Franceens, UK Subs and playing with Hazel O’Connor again this time at The Great British Alternative Music Festival in Minehead, previously played with her at Rebellion 2010.
Early 2013 we will be working on some new songs to bring into the set……recording for the 3rd Department S LP is coming along with half the tracks sorted, some of which like “Cause” and “The Long March” are already key songs in our live work……..about 4 more will hopefully be debuted in the near future. We are currently talking to people in Eastern Europe about some gigs along with Western Europe and maybe a farm in the West Country……along with UK dates with some well known faces…….watch out for details as they break
Other exciting news….Dreadzone and our own Mike Herbage might well be working together…..Is Vic There? as always appeared on many a compilation this year most current of which is TEENAGE KICKS a punk CD in the shops now
Summers over and Winter draws on!!!! Thanks to all the people who have seen us over the last few months, great times at British Alternative Music Festival in Minehead. Rewind Festival in Belgium was great fun….got to see Clan of Xymox which was great but what we didn’t know at the time was that Ronny and the boys were in the process of doing a cover album which includes IS VIC THERE? It’s called “Kindred Spirits” and will be out on 5th October check it out.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the summer was playing Benicassim in Spain….we never really expected to play on the same bill as Bob Dylan!!! Great festival as it combines beach, beer and then the music starts around 7 and ends about 2…..highlights, besides us of course, Stone Roses were well worth the wait, Noel Gallagher was brilliant and told us it was his best show ever….and the Maccabees and the Horrors rocked the main stage. If you want to avoid standing in a wet field next summer book this one as 2013 is gonna be another big year for Benicassim.
We are currently lining up dates for the next few months (see our gigs guide) one in November is confirmed in York with PENETRATION with hopefully more to follow, never played with them before but we were at The Roundhouse to see them supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees in the late 70’s a bill which also included The Human League. If you live in Surrey then you can catch us at City Fest in Guildford on the 3 Nov…….more dates to follow and if you want us to play just contact us……have guitars will travel…..from Aberdeen to Zanzibar
